A massive global IT outage disrupts industries worldwide today as airlines, banks, broadcasters, and emergency services face major system failures. The crisis forces major U.S. airlines, including United, American, and Delta, to issue a global ground stop that results in nearly 3,000 canceled flights within or into the United States.
The widespread disruption stems from a defective content update for Windows hosts released by the Texas-based cybersecurity company CrowdStrike. The company explains that a sensor configuration update for its Falcon platform triggers a logic error, which ultimately causes computers to crash and display the infamous blue error screen.
Although Microsoft confirms that it resolves the underlying issue, residual problems continue to plague systems across the globe. CrowdStrike is currently conducting a thorough root cause analysis to determine exactly how this logic flaw occurred in its cloud-based protection system, while affected organizations work diligently to restore their normal operations.
