The Linux Foundation launches the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF) to prevent AI agents from splintering into incompatible, locked-down products. This new group acts as a neutral home for open source projects related to autonomous AI systems. Anthropic, Block, and OpenAI anchor the launch by donating key technologies that serve as the basic plumbing for the emerging agent era.
Anthropic contributes its Model Context Protocol (MCP) for connecting models to data, Block donates its Goose open source agent framework, and OpenAI provides AGENTS.md, a file that instructs AI coding tools on how to behave. Other major members include AWS, Bloomberg, Cloudflare, and Google, signaling a broad industry push to establish shared guardrails. These companies emphasize that protocols act as a shared language, allowing different systems to work together seamlessly without requiring developers to reinvent integrations.
Linux Foundation executive director Jim Zemlin states the goal is to avoid a future dominated by closed, proprietary stacks that lock tool connections and agent behavior behind a few platforms. By coordinating interoperability, safety patterns, and best practices under one roof, the AAIF aims to ensure AI agents remain trustworthy at scale. Meanwhile, Block views its open source contribution as proof that open alternatives match proprietary agents, leveraging community improvements to benefit everyone.
