Massive AI Rounds Push Global Venture Funding to Record $189B in February

Global venture funding hits an unprecedented $189 billion in February, driven almost entirely by monumental raises from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Waymo. Meanwhile, early-stage startups see shrinking shares as public software markets face a major downturn.

Global venture investment reaches a staggering $189 billion in February, marking the largest startup funding month on record. A massive 83 percent of this capital goes to just three companies, with OpenAI securing an unprecedented $110 billion, Anthropic raising $30 billion, and Waymo bringing in $16 billion. This extraordinary surge pushes overall funding up nearly 780 percent compared to the $21.5 billion raised during the same month last year.

This record-breaking private investment occurs alongside a trillion-dollar drop in the public stock market as AI compute and tooling disrupt established software companies. Four additional startups each raise $1 billion or more, including Rapidus, Wayve, World Labs, and Cerebras Systems. Strategic corporate investors, private equity firms, and alternative investors lead these massive late-stage rounds, highlighting a dramatic shift in where the largest pools of capital are flowing.

The extreme concentration of capital leaves earlier-stage startups struggling for attention, as seed-stage funding drops 11 percent year over year to $2.6 billion. US-based startups dominate the global landscape, capturing 92 percent of all venture funding, a sharp increase from 59 percent just a year ago. AI-related companies account for 90 percent of all global funding, proving that the current venture market revolves almost entirely around artificial intelligence.
