McKinsey Report Highlights Applied AI and ML Industrialization as Top Tech Trends
McKinsey's 2022 Technology Trends Outlook identifies applied AI and industrializing machine learning as leading tech trends based on investment and innovation metrics. Applied AI currently leads all 14 trends in maturity and mainstream adoption potential.
McKinsey releases its Technology Trends Outlook 2022, naming applied AI and industrializing machine learning as two of the 14 most significant technology trends today. The study builds on previous research by analyzing quantitative factors like investment, research activity, and news coverage to measure the momentum of each trend.
Applied AI ranks highest among all 14 trends in innovation, interest, and investment, showing closer proximity to mainstream adoption than other technologies. The report indicates that 56% of organizations currently adopt AI, with the tech industry leading the way and product development seeing the greatest benefits from these practical implementations.
Industrializing machine learning emerges as a complementary trend that focuses on creating an interoperable stack of technical tools to automate and scale ML use across organizations. Despite this rapid progress from science to engineering to scale, McKinsey warns that key uncertainties such as talent availability, cybersecurity concerns, and questions about responsible AI use still impact the future of these technologies.
