Meta AI Reaches Nearly 500 Million Monthly Active Users
Mark Zuckerberg announces that Meta AI boasts nearly 500 million monthly active users, positioning it to become the world's most used AI assistant. The rapid growth occurs even before the service launches in major markets like the European Union.
Mark Zuckerberg announces at Meta Connect 2024 that Meta AI reaches nearly 500 million monthly active users, making it one of the most used AI assistants globally. He notes that the company does not even operate in several major markets yet, including the entire European Union. With this rapid momentum, Meta AI remains on track to become the most used AI assistant in the world.
India drives much of this massive user base, largely due to the immense popularity of WhatsApp in the region. This figure of nearly 500 million monthly users significantly surpasses the more than 200 million weekly users reported by OpenAI for ChatGPT. To support and expand this global audience, Meta unveils a new family of models called Llama 3.2, which includes new multimodal capabilities and lightweight models specifically designed for regions outside of Europe.
Alongside the new models, Meta introduces several new features to enhance the user experience across its social apps. Users now have access to new celebrity voices and lip-synced translations within the Meta AI assistant. Furthermore, Meta expands its generative "Imagine" feature across Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger, allowing the AI to understand, answer questions about, and directly edit user photos.
