Meta officially dismantles its existing artificial intelligence division and restructures it into four new groups under an umbrella organization called the Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL). Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang, who joined the company in June after founding Scale AI, announces the changes in a new internal memo. The restructuring represents Meta's latest effort to streamline its AI operations and regain competitive ground.
The central piece of this new structure is a group called TBD Labs, which Wang oversees directly. This team focuses on developing foundation models, including the company's flagship Llama series. The remaining three groups handle dedicated areas of AI development, specifically research, product integration, and infrastructure.
This major shakeup comes as Meta tries to keep pace with industry rivals like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind. CEO Mark Zuckerberg takes a hands-on approach to the transition by personally recruiting talent for the new division. By concentrating its resources into these specialized groups, Meta aims to accelerate its AI development and close the gap in the rapidly evolving AI arms race.
