Meta Hides AI Edit Labels While Keeping Full AI Generation Tags Visible
Meta is moving its "AI info" label for edited content into a hidden menu on Instagram, Facebook, and Threads. Fully AI-generated posts will still display the label prominently beneath the author's name.
Meta is updating how it labels content edited or modified by AI tools across Instagram, Facebook, and Threads. Instead of displaying the "AI info" label directly under the username, the company is moving this indicator into the post's hidden menu. This change takes effect next week as part of Meta's effort to better reflect the extent of AI used in a piece of content.
Despite hiding the label for modified posts, Meta continues to show the "AI info" tag prominently beneath the author's name for content that is fully generated by AI. The company notes that these prominent labels will also specify whether the content is flagged due to industry-shared signals or user self-disclosure. This distinction separates minor AI edits from complete AI generation.
Critics warn that burying the edit label makes it easier for users to be deceived by subtly altered images as editing tools become increasingly advanced. This adjustment follows a previous change in July when Meta renamed the tag from "Made with AI" to "AI info" after photographers complained the original phrasing incorrectly implied their real photos were entirely artificial.
