Meta confirms that it lays off employees across several teams, including Reality Labs, Instagram, and WhatsApp, as part of a broader effort to reallocate resources. A company spokesperson states that these changes aim to align resources with long-term strategic goals and location strategies, which involves moving some teams and reassigning employees to different roles. Notably, Jane Manchun Wong, a well-known software engineer who previously uncovered unannounced app features, is among those impacted by the workforce reduction.
Despite rumors suggesting cuts in recruiting, legal operations, and Threads, Meta clarifies that these specific divisions do not experience layoffs during this reorganization. The company declines to disclose the exact number of affected employees or the full list of involved organizations. However, a former employee reveals that more than a dozen people on their team receive video calls notifying them that their roles are eliminated.
Instead of outright termination, Meta offers some impacted workers different positions under new contracts or the choice to take a severance package, with several employees opting for the latter. Affected workers reportedly receive about six weeks of severance pay. Additionally, circulating rumors and a Financial Times report indicate that some employees face termination for allegedly misusing their $25 meal credits to purchase non-food household items.
