Meta Releases Llama 2 AI Model for Free Commercial Use

Meta open sources Llama 2, making its next-generation large language model available for free to researchers and businesses. The company partners with Microsoft to distribute the model through Azure AI.

Meta releases Llama 2, its next-generation large language model, as an open-source tool available free of charge for both research and commercial use. Following massive demand for the original Llama model, which receives over 100,000 access requests, Meta provides the pretrained model weights and starting code for conversational fine-tuned versions to the public.

The company argues that an open approach drives innovation by giving startups, researchers, and businesses access to powerful tools they cannot easily build themselves. Meta believes that opening access allows a global community of developers to stress-test the models, identify vulnerabilities, and fix problems much faster than a closed system permits.

Meta partners with Microsoft to distribute Llama 2, making the model available starting today in the Azure AI model catalog. This collaboration represents a major expansion of the companies' joint efforts in the generative AI space, enabling a wider range of developers and enterprises to build new AI-powered experiences.
