Meta Scales Back AR Glasses Plans and Pivots Portal to Business Market
Meta is canceling the commercial release of its first augmented reality glasses to cut costs and is shifting its Portal smart displays away from consumers toward enterprise use.
Meta is significantly scaling back its augmented reality hardware plans by canceling the commercial release of its first AR glasses, codenamed Project Nazare. Instead of selling this initial version to the public in 2024 as originally planned, the company is turning the device into an internal demonstration product. Meta is now prioritizing the development and release of a second generation of AR glasses, codenamed Artemis.
The company is also pivoting its Portal smart display away from the consumer market entirely. Meta no longer plans to release consumer-oriented Portal devices, choosing instead to focus on repositioning the product as a business tool for hybrid work environments. This shift aligns with recent software updates that make the newest Portal models compatible with Zoom and Microsoft Teams.
These cutbacks are part of a larger effort by Meta to reduce heavy investments in its Reality Labs division as the company deals with slowed revenue growth and hiring freezes. The decision to shelve the Nazare glasses follows a recent report revealing that Meta is also canceling the first version of its planned smartwatch that features a built-in camera. Meta does not comment on these specific hardware adjustments.
