For certain African and Indian-based languages, the accuracy improvements exceed 70%, offering a massive leap forward for speakers of underrepresented languages.
The development of NLLB-200 focuses heavily on addressing the digital divide that excludes billions of people who speak languages outside of the dominant few like English and Mandarin. To support this ambitious project, Meta researchers also create FLORES-200, a comprehensive evaluation dataset that tests the AI's performance across 40,000 different language directions to ensure high-quality results.
To maximize the global impact of this technology, Meta makes the NLLB-200 models, the FLORES-200 dataset, and the training code completely open source for developers. Additionally, the company offers up to $200,000 in grants to nonprofits and researchers applying this tool to critical areas like education, food security, and sustainability. These advancements currently power over 25 billion daily translations across Meta's platforms like Facebook and Instagram.
