Meta Unveils Llama 3.1 to Rival Top Closed AI Models
Meta releases its largest open-source AI model to date, Llama 3.1 405B, which directly competes with leading closed models like GPT-4o and Claude 3.5 Sonnet. The updated model family also features an expanded context window and new multilingual capabilities.
Meta Platforms Inc. unveils Llama 3.1 405B, its largest and most capable open-source artificial intelligence model to date. The company claims this massive 405 billion-parameter model rivals top closed-source systems from competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic across a variety of tasks including general knowledge, math, and tool use.
The new model features a 128,000-token context window that allows it to process the equivalent of a 400-page novel in a single prompt. Meta also expands multilingual support to include eight new languages such as French, German, Hindi, and Spanish, bringing these advanced translation and reasoning features to the smaller 8 billion and 70 billion parameter versions as well.
Meta updates its licensing to allow developers to use the outputs of Llama models to train and improve other smaller AI systems. Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg frames this release as a major step for open-source innovation, comparing the model's potential industry impact to the historical significance of the Linux operating system.
