Meta Unveils Open Llama 2 AI Models to Rival ChatGPT
Meta releases Llama 2, a significantly upgraded family of open-source text-generating AI models available for both commercial and research use.
Meta expands the generative AI landscape by introducing Llama 2, a new family of AI models designed to power chatbots similar to OpenAI's ChatGPT and Bing Chat. Unlike the previous Llama generation, which required special access and eventually leaked online, Meta makes Llama 2 completely free for both research and commercial applications.
The tech giant partners with major platforms to ensure broad availability, allowing developers to fine-tune the pretrained models on AWS, Azure, and Hugging Face. Furthermore, Meta optimizes Llama 2 for everyday hardware through expanded partnerships with Microsoft for Windows and Qualcomm to bring the AI directly to smartphones and PCs with Snapdragon chips in 2024.
Llama 2 offers significant technical improvements over its predecessor, training on two trillion tokens to achieve much higher performance. The model family includes standard Llama 2 and a conversation-focused Llama 2-Chat variant, both available in 7 billion, 13 billion, and 70 billion parameter sizes to suit different computing needs and complexity levels.
