Meta Updates AI Content Labels to Better Match User Expectations
Meta is refining how it labels AI-generated and modified content across its platforms, moving away from broad "Made with AI" tags to more nuanced "AI info" markers. The company now places labels for minor AI edits in post menus while keeping prominent tags for fully AI-generated material.
Meta is updating its approach to labeling AI-generated and manipulated media across Facebook, Instagram, and Threads to provide better context for users. The company now uses "AI info" labels instead of the previous "Made with AI" tags, addressing feedback that the older markers were too broad and did not always align with user expectations.
Under this refined system, Meta differentiates between content that is fully generated by AI and content that is simply edited or retouched by AI tools. Fully AI-generated content continues to display a prominent "AI info" label directly on the post, whereas content that only receives minor AI modifications features the label tucked inside the post's dropdown menu.
These changes rely on industry-standard indicators embedded in content by other AI companies, though Meta continues to work with industry partners to improve this detection process. The updated labeling strategy reflects recommendations from the Meta Oversight Board, extensive public surveys, and consultations with civil society organizations to handle the modern landscape of digital media.
