Meta Upgrades Messenger With HD Video, AI Backgrounds, and Siri Integration
Meta is rolling out a suite of new features for Messenger, including high-definition video calls, digital voicemail, and AI-generated backgrounds. The update also brings voice isolation and Siri integration to improve the overall calling experience.
Meta is upgrading its Messenger app with several new features designed to improve audio and video quality. HD video calls now serve as the default for connections made over Wi-Fi and remain an optional setting for cellular calls. Additionally, the app introduces AI-powered noise suppression, which users can easily enable through the call settings menu to block out distracting background sounds.
The update also brings a modern twist to missed connections by allowing users to leave audio or video messages. When a contact does not answer an incoming call, callers see a new "Record message" button that functions like a digital voicemail. Furthermore, Meta adds deeper Siri integration for iOS devices, letting users ask Apple's assistant to send messages or initiate calls directly within Messenger using simple voice commands.
Meta is finally launching the AI-generated backgrounds for video calls that it previewed earlier this year. During a Messenger video call, users tap the "effects" icon in the sidebar and select "Backgrounds" to instantly apply these custom AI visuals. These latest additions follow other recent app expansions, such as the introduction of communities, the integration of the Meta AI chatbot into the search bar, and the shift to default end-to-end encryption.
