Meta's new text-based app Threads surpasses 100 million users in less than five days, officially becoming the fastest-growing consumer application in history. This unprecedented surge easily breaks the previous record set by the artificial intelligence tool ChatGPT, which takes two months to reach the same milestone. By comparison, TikTok takes nine months and Instagram takes two and a half years to hit the 100 million mark.
The rapid expansion stems largely from Threads being directly linked to Instagram, which boasts more than one billion regular users. The app launches in 100 countries on Apple and Android app stores, though it remains unavailable in Europe due to ongoing legal issues between Meta and the European Union regarding data privacy legislation. This seamless integration provides Threads with an immediate scale that rival platforms lack.
Threads emerges as a direct competitor to Twitter at a time when the older platform experiences repeated technical failures and user pushback under Elon Musk's ownership. Since Musk purchases Twitter and reduces its workforce, the platform faces criticism for charging for previously free services and reinstating banned accounts. In response to the new competition, Musk threatens to sue Meta for allegedly stealing trade secrets and intellectual property, claims that Meta firmly denies.
