Microsoft confirms it is pursuing a potential acquisition of TikTok after CEO Satya Nadella speaks directly with US President Donald Trump. The technology giant outlines plans to explore a purchase of the social video app not only in the United States, but also in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
The company promises to conduct a complete security review and implement world-class privacy protections if a deal goes through. Microsoft also pledges to relocate user data to their appropriate countries and provide proper economic benefits to the United States Treasury.
Microsoft appreciates the personal involvement of the President in these security matters but warns that the discussions remain preliminary. The company states it aims to complete negotiations with TikTok's parent company ByteDance no later than September 15, 2020, and vows to remain silent until a final decision is reached.
