Microsoft Copilot Reaches General Availability With Free Enterprise Data Protection
Microsoft officially transitions Copilot out of preview, offering GPT-4-powered web chat with commercial data protection at no extra cost for eligible users. The rebranding from Bing Chat Enterprise includes new copyright commitments to boost organizational confidence.
Microsoft announces that Copilot is now generally available, marking its official transition out of the preview phase that began in February. Formerly known as Bing Chat and Bing Chat Enterprise, the rebranded AI companion boasts billions of prompts and responses from users worldwide. The service provides a streamlined web chat experience at copilot.microsoft.com, utilizing powerful models like GPT-4 and DALL-E 3 to help users draft emails, summarize documents, and generate images.
Organizations benefit significantly from this release because eligible users receive commercial data protection at no additional cost. When employees sign in with a valid Microsoft Entra ID, their prompts and responses are not saved, Microsoft does not access the data, and the information is not used to train the underlying large language models. This protection currently applies to users with specific licenses, such as Microsoft 365 E3, E5, Business Standard, and Business Premium, with plans to expand to all Entra ID users in the future.
To further encourage workplace adoption, Copilot is now backed by the Universal Commercial License Terms for Online Services. This alignment includes Microsoft's Customer Copyright Commitment, allowing businesses to use the AI tool without worrying about potential copyright claims. These robust legal and privacy protections give companies the confidence to integrate Copilot directly into their daily workflows.
