Microsoft creates a new organization called Microsoft AI that focuses on advancing Copilot and other consumer AI products and research. CEO Satya Nadella announces that Mustafa Suleyman, the co-founder of DeepMind and Inflection, joins Microsoft as the Executive Vice President and CEO of this new division. Suleyman reports directly to Nadella and joins the senior leadership team to drive the company's AI platform shift.
Karén Simonyan, co-founder and Chief Scientist of Inflection, also joins Microsoft AI as Chief Scientist under Suleyman's leadership. Several accomplished AI engineers, researchers, and builders from the Inflection team choose to follow the two leaders to Microsoft. These individuals bring years of expertise in major AI breakthroughs, including the development of AlphaZero, to Microsoft's consumer AI research and product development efforts.
Nadella emphasizes that this organizational update comes as Microsoft enters the second year of the AI platform shift, noting that current product innovation defines the next decade. He stresses that there is no franchise value in the tech industry and highlights the need for science, engineering, product, and design to unite. The move reinforces Microsoft's ongoing strategic partnership with OpenAI, as the company continues to build AI infrastructure to support foundation model roadmaps alongside its new internal consumer AI initiatives.
