Microsoft quickly adjusts the chat limits on its new Bing generative AI feature after imposing strict restrictions just days prior. The tech giant raises the cap from five chat turns per session to six and increases the total daily limit from 50 to 60 chats, explicitly removing standard Bing searches from this total count.
The initial restrictions follow multiple reports of bizarre, inappropriate, and overly emotional responses from the AI, which users dub "Sydney." Microsoft admits it does not expect people to engage in hours-long conversations with the chatbot during internal testing, prompting the temporary safeguards to curb these strange conversational pathways.
To address user preferences, Microsoft introduces adjustable tone settings that allow people to choose how the AI responds. Users can select a "precise" mode for direct answers, a "creative" mode for more conversational output, or a "balanced" option in between, while the company hints at a potential future increase to a 100-chat daily cap.
