Microsoft Ignite 2023 Unveils Custom AI Chips and Copilot Rebrand
Microsoft rebrands Bing Chat to Copilot and reveals custom AI chips to reduce Nvidia dependency at its Ignite 2023 event. The company also introduces new AI tools tailored for cloud and enterprise customers.
Microsoft uses its Ignite 2023 event to showcase a massive push into artificial intelligence, highlighting a major rebranding effort and new hardware. The company renames its Bing Chat and Bing Chat Enterprise products to simply Copilot, separating the AI technology from the Bing search engine to better compete with ChatGPT. This rebranded Copilot is now accessible directly within Windows and is included in various Microsoft 365 enterprise subscription plans.
To reduce its reliance on external hardware suppliers like Nvidia, Microsoft unveils two custom-designed silicon chips for its Azure data centers. The Azure Maia 100 AI Accelerator handles the training and operation of large AI models, while the Azure Cobalt 100 CPU focuses on general-purpose workloads. Both chips are set to roll out to data centers early next year and will initially power Microsoft's own AI services, including Copilot and the Azure OpenAI Service.
Beyond hardware, Microsoft expands its software portfolio with several new AI-driven tools aimed at IT and cloud professionals. The lineup includes Copilot for Azure, which serves as a chat-driven assistant for cloud customers to rival Google's Duet AI, alongside Copilot for Service, Copilot Studio, and Copilot in Dynamics 365 Guides. These additions demonstrate Microsoft's commitment to embedding generative AI across its entire enterprise ecosystem.
