Microsoft launches a new $20 per month consumer subscription called Copilot Pro to monetize its AI features across popular applications like Word and Excel. The move aims to transform the costly Copilot technology into a reliable revenue generator by expanding its paying user base.
Microsoft launches a new consumer subscription called Copilot Pro at $20 per user per month to turn its AI technology into a reliable revenue generator. With over 40% of the Fortune 100 already participating in early access, the company aims to broaden its base of paying customers to offset the enormous cloud computing costs of running generative AI models. This new tier requires users to have an existing Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription, acting as a premium add-on rather than a standalone bundle.
The Copilot Pro plan integrates AI capabilities directly into essential productivity apps including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote across PC, Mac, and iPad devices. Subscribers receive the exact same enterprise-level features that business customers currently use, such as drafting and summarizing text in Word, generating data visualizations in Excel, and tailoring email tones in Outlook. Additionally, the subscription includes 100 daily "boosts" in Microsoft's Designer image creation tool to accelerate and enhance image generation.
Beyond standard application features, Copilot Pro provides priority access to the latest underlying AI models, including OpenAI's GPT-4 Turbo, ensuring faster performance even during peak usage times. Microsoft also plans to allow subscribers to toggle between different AI models in the future depending on their specific tasks. By loosening enterprise eligibility requirements while introducing this consumer option, Microsoft strategically makes its entire software ecosystem more attractive through these advanced AI enhancements.
