Microsoft Leads Rivals by Purchasing 485,000 Nvidia AI Chips in 2024
Microsoft buys nearly 500,000 Nvidia Hopper chips this year, outpacing competitors like Meta to fuel its massive artificial intelligence expansion.
Microsoft purchases 485,000 Nvidia Hopper chips in 2024, which is more than double the amount acquired by any of its closest competitors. According to data from tech consultancy Omdia, Meta buys 224,000 of these flagship chips this year, highlighting a significant gap in hardware investments between the two tech giants.
This massive acquisition represents a huge increase for Microsoft, as it buys more than three times the number of Nvidia chips it acquired in 2023. The surge in hardware spending directly supports the company's deep immersion into artificial intelligence infrastructure and its expanding partnership with OpenAI.
Alongside buying off-the-shelf hardware, Microsoft develops its own custom AI chips called Maia to support its growing data center needs. To power these energy-intensive operations, the company also signs a deal to purchase all electricity from the reopened Three Mile Island nuclear plant for the next 20 years.
