Microsoft Poaches Inflection AI Founders to Lead New Consumer Division
Microsoft hires Inflection AI co-founders Mustafa Suleyman and Karén Simonyan to lead a newly created consumer AI division focused on Copilot, Bing, and Edge. The unusual talent deal prompts Inflection AI to pivot its business model toward an enterprise API service.
Microsoft hires Mustafa Suleyman and Karén Simonyan, the co-founders of prominent AI startup Inflection AI, to lead a newly formed consumer AI division called Microsoft AI. Suleyman takes on the role of executive vice president and CEO of Microsoft AI, reporting directly to CEO Satya Nadella, while Simonyan joins as chief scientist. The new division focuses on overseeing AI products and research for Copilot, Bing, and Edge.
This move brings several of Inflection AI's top engineers and researchers to Microsoft as the tech giant aggressively pursues leading talent in the artificial intelligence space. The relationship between the two companies is already close, as Microsoft led a $1.3 billion funding round for Inflection AI less than a year ago. The hiring announcement comes just ahead of a Microsoft event where the company plans to showcase its latest consumer AI advances across Copilot, Windows, and Surface devices.
Following this major talent acquisition, Inflection AI shifts its focus away from consumer products and pivots to a custom AI studio business. The startup plans to concentrate on building and testing custom generative AI models for enterprise clients via an API. Additionally, Inflection AI announces that it hosts its Inflection-2.5 model on Microsoft Azure to reach creators everywhere, with plans to expand to other cloud hosting platforms soon.
