Microsoft Pours $1.5 Billion Into UAE AI Firm G42

Microsoft invests $1.5 billion in United Arab Emirates-based AI developer G42, securing a minority stake and a board seat for Brad Smith. The partnership requires G42 to cut ties with Chinese hardware and shifts its infrastructure to Microsoft Azure.

Microsoft announces a $1.5 billion investment in G42, an artificial intelligence developer based in the United Arab Emirates. As part of this major transaction, the tech giant receives a minority stake in the company and Microsoft Vice Chair Brad Smith joins the G42 board of directors. This investment significantly expands Microsoft's influence in the global AI startup ecosystem.

The deal requires careful negotiation with the U.S. government and mandates that G42 remove Chinese hardware, specifically equipment from Huawei, from its AI systems. In return for this strategic alignment, G42 migrates its essential data platforms and technology infrastructure to Microsoft Azure. The UAE company also leverages Azure to deliver its Jais large language model, which processes both Arabic and English text, to its customers.

Beyond the immediate financial investment, the two companies establish a $1 billion fund to build AI skills in the UAE and other regions. They also plan to collaborate on building new data center infrastructure in emerging markets across the Middle East, Central Asia, and Africa. This expansion aims to accelerate digital transformation and provide secure, low-latency cloud services to rapidly developing industries.
