Microsoft Rebrands Bing Chat to Copilot Amid Enterprise Expansion
Microsoft drops the Bing Chat name, unifying its AI assistant under the Copilot brand for both consumers and businesses. The rebrand comes with new commercial data protections and broader integration across Microsoft 365 subscriptions.
Microsoft renames Bing Chat to Copilot in Bing as part of a major rebranding effort announced at Microsoft Ignite 2023. The corporate-focused Bing Chat Enterprise also receives the simplified Copilot name as the company aims to create a unified AI experience across consumer and commercial products. This change adds to Microsoft's growing list of tools that share the Copilot brand, and suggests a strategic shift away from tying the AI technology directly to the Bing search engine.
Beyond the name change, Microsoft introduces significant privacy features for business users starting December 1. Customers who sign in with a Microsoft Entra ID gain commercial data protection, ensuring their prompts and responses are not saved or used to train foundational AI models. Microsoft promises it has no access to this enterprise data, addressing major corporate security concerns surrounding generative AI.
The AI assistant integrates deeply into the Microsoft ecosystem, becoming accessible directly within Windows alongside its existing web presence. Copilot is available at no extra cost for users with Microsoft 365 E3, E5, Business Premium, and Business Standard plans, with F3 support arriving on December 1. Other customers have the option to purchase the standalone service for $5 per user per month.
