Microsoft Targets TikTok Acquisition to Challenge Facebook in Social Media
Microsoft emerges as the frontrunner to acquire TikTok's U.S. operations, a move that would combine the video app with LinkedIn to create a formidable rival to Facebook. The deal also promises Microsoft a crucial entry point into the Gen Z market and the lucrative digital advertising space.
President Donald Trump gives ByteDance until mid-September to sell TikTok's U.S. operations, citing national security concerns. While TikTok prepares a lawsuit to block this forced sale, tech companies like Oracle and Twitter express interest, but Microsoft remains the clear frontrunner to acquire the popular video app.
Acquiring TikTok allows Microsoft to pair the rapidly growing platform with its existing professional network, LinkedIn. A Fortune poll shows that while TikTok currently trails Facebook and Instagram in overall U.S. adult users, combining its youthful audience with LinkedIn's 20% adult user base gives Microsoft the foundation to compete directly against Facebook in the social media arena.
The deal also provides Microsoft with a significant boost in the digital advertising market, which currently sees 70% of its revenue go to Google, Facebook, and Amazon. Furthermore, analysts note that while other tech giants face strict antitrust scrutiny, Microsoft has the opportunity to seize this consumer social media crown jewel and finally establish a strong connection with Generation Z users.
