Microsoft Teams Overtakes Zoom in Remote Work Usage Growth
New research from Aternity reveals that Microsoft Teams experiences higher usage growth than Zoom, overtaking the video conferencing giant after recent security missteps. Employees rely heavily on direct audio and video calls for one-on-one interactions during the shift to remote work.
Microsoft Teams currently surpasses Zoom in usage growth as the videoconferencing market shifts during the global coronavirus lockdowns. According to Aternity’s latest Productivity Tracker, Microsoft Teams experiences an 894% growth in usage by mid-June compared to its February baseline, while Zoom sees a 677% increase during the same period.
This change in leadership stems from Zoom’s recent security missteps, including issues with end-to-end encryption, which drive organizations to seek safer alternatives. Aternity suggests that Microsoft’s aggressive push for Office 365 adoption also plays a significant role in Teams overtaking a competitor that initially grows much faster at the start of the remote work surge.
The research highlights that remote workers predominantly use these collaboration tools for direct, one-on-one interactions rather than large group meetings. Data shows that direct audio and video calls account for the vast majority of employee communications, while Microsoft Office overall makes up 38% of total application usage time, with Outlook seeing a 46% growth spike.
