Microsoft fully details the Xbox Series S, a $299 next-gen console that arrives on November 10th as a more affordable alternative to the Series X. The system features the same Zen 2-based CPU as its premium counterpart, running at a slightly reduced speed of 3.6GHz compared to the 3.8GHz found in the Series X. This design choice allows the console to maintain high performance while significantly reducing the overall price for consumers.
The primary difference between the two consoles lies in the GPU capabilities. The Xbox Series S delivers four times the processing power of the original Xbox One and supports gameplay experiences up to 120 frames per second. Microsoft targets this console specifically at 1080p or 1440p gaming, recognizing that many players prioritize higher framerates over 4K resolution.
To achieve the lower price point, Microsoft utilizes a less powerful GPU with 20 compute units running at 1.565GHz, resulting in 4 teraflops of performance. This contrasts sharply with the 12.15 teraflops found in the larger Xbox Series X, but the Series S GPU still remains around three times more powerful than the original Xbox One.
