Microsoft Unveils Copilot+ PCs to Usher in On-Device AI Era

Microsoft unveils a completely new category of Windows computers called Copilot+ PCs, designed specifically to handle artificial intelligence tasks directly on the device. These innovative machines feature powerful new silicon capable of performing over 40 trillion operations per second, delivering unmatched speed and all-day battery life. Major hardware partners like Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Samsung join Microsoft Surface in launching these ultra-thin laptops.
The new system architecture introduces a high-performance Neural Processing Unit (NPU) that works alongside the CPU and GPU to run advanced AI models efficiently. This hardware allows Copilot+ PCs to perform up to 20 times faster and be 100 times more efficient for AI workloads than previous generations. Microsoft notes that these new computers even outperform Apple's MacBook Air 15" by up to 58% in sustained multithreaded performance while offering up to 22 hours of local video playback.
Copilot+ PCs include exclusive AI features that transform how users interact with their computers. Recall allows users to instantly find anything they have previously seen on their screen, while Cocreator enables near real-time AI image generation directly on the device. Additionally, Live Captions breaks language barriers by translating audio from over 40 languages into English in real time, marking what Microsoft calls the most significant change to the Windows platform in decades.
