Microsoft Unveils Project Volterra Arm Mini PC With Dedicated AI Chip
Microsoft introduces Project Volterra, an Arm-powered mini PC equipped with a neural processing unit to help developers build AI applications. The device also brings a native Arm version of Visual Studio 2022 to Windows.
Microsoft reveals Project Volterra, a new Arm-powered mini PC designed specifically for developers exploring artificial intelligence scenarios. The device runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon platform and features a dedicated neural processing unit that provides top-tier AI computing capacity.
Unlike traditional PCs, Project Volterra includes an NPU similar to those found in smartphones and Apple Silicon chips, signaling Microsoft's belief that these processors will soon become standard in all computing devices. To support this hardware, Microsoft prepares to launch a native Arm version of Visual Studio 2022 in the coming weeks, replacing the slower and feature-limited x64 emulation used by previous devices.
The physical mini PC features a variety of ports, including DisplayPort, Ethernet, USB-C, and USB-A connections. Microsoft builds the compact chassis using recycled ocean plastic and utilizes a stackable design for convenient deployment, though the company plans to release the hardware later this year.
