At its Build 2023 conference, Microsoft reveals Windows Copilot, a new AI-powered feature that embeds Bing and ChatGPT directly into the Windows 11 desktop. This tool acts as a centralized sidebar that stays open across all applications and helps users automate everyday tasks like copying, pasting, taking screenshots, and managing windows.
Users access the assistant through a convenient taskbar button, which opens a side panel capable of answering questions, checking the weather, or summarizing text. The AI automatically detects the active application on the left side of the screen to offer context-aware suggestions, such as helping users adjust focus settings or plan trips without switching tabs.
A major highlight of Windows Copilot is its support for first and third-party plugins, extending the AI's capabilities beyond its internal data. Through an upcoming plugin store, users connect services like Spotify or Kayak directly to the assistant, allowing them to control music or book travel seamlessly through conversational commands.
