Mirantis Takes Over Docker Enterprise in Major Shift for Container Pioneer
Mirantis acquires Docker's Enterprise platform and team, leaving Docker to focus solely on developer tools. The deal marks a significant retreat for the once-dominant container company.
Mirantis acquires Docker’s Enterprise business, taking control of the Docker Enterprise Engine, Docker Trusted Registry, and the entire enterprise customer base. The deal includes all associated intellectual property, strategic alliances, and partner programs. Both companies state that they will continue collaborating on the open-source components of the Docker platform.
This sale strips Docker of its core enterprise products and leaves the company as a shadow of its former high-flying unicorn self. Docker now plans to return to its roots by focusing entirely on developer workflows, specifically expanding Docker Desktop and Docker Hub. The company also raises a $35 million funding round from Benchmark to support this new direction under its recently installed CEO.
The acquisition highlights Docker's dramatic fall from leading the container revolution to becoming an afterthought after the industry embraced Kubernetes. Despite this shift, Docker Enterprise still boasts an impressive client list that includes about a third of the Fortune 100 and a fifth of the Global 500. Mirantis keeps the Docker Enterprise brand alive as it integrates these valuable corporate customers into its own operations.
