Mistral AI launches a new free tier that allows developers to experiment, evaluate, and prototype with its AI models at no cost. This offering is available through la Plateforme, the startup's API-serving platform, and aims to attract builders who want to avoid the complicated infrastructure setup required to host open-source models locally. While the free tier supports testing, developers need to upgrade to a paid commercial tier for higher rate limits if they plan to deploy their applications into production.
To stay competitive in a rapidly commoditizing market, Mistral also reduces the prices for accessing several of its models through API endpoints. The startup cuts the cost of using Mistral NeMo, Mistral Small, and Codestral by more than fifty percent, while Mistral Large sees a thirty-three percent price reduction. These aggressive price cuts position Mistral directly against similar moves from major rivals like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic.
In addition to the developer-focused updates, Mistral brings its first multimodal model, Pixtral 12B, to its free consumer chatbot, le Chat. This new model processes both text and images, enabling users to scan, analyze, and search through image files directly in the interface. By combining a free developer tier, steep API discounts, and new multimodal features, the $6 billion startup strives to build a loyal user base and drive future platform upgrades.
