Mistral AI Raises Record €3 Billion to Power Europe's Sovereign AI Push
French AI lab Mistral AI announces a €3 billion (about $3.58 billion) Series D round at a post-money valuation of more than €21 billion (about $24.39 billion), which the company calls the largest equity fundraising round ever completed by a European technology company. Samsung Electronics leads the round, with EQT-managed Scaleup Europe Fund and existing investor PSG Equity joining as co-leads. Mistral plans to use the capital to scale compute capacity, build infrastructure, accelerate commercial growth, and expand internationally.
The funding strengthens Mistral's positioning around sovereign AI, a strategy that addresses growing concerns in Europe and elsewhere about overdependence on U.S. technology, particularly as politics around AI regulation intensify Stateside. Mistral aims to build 1 GW of compute capacity in Europe by 2030 and recently unveils tools that let customers choose which regions process their AI queries. It also begins hosting third-party, open-weight AI models, including Chinese ones, positioning itself as an AI services provider that gives customers control over which models they use and how they use them.
Mistral pushes back on the notion that its ambitions are limited to France or that it is becoming a mere inference provider, noting that it operates in 20 countries and views its frontier research as the foundation of its infrastructure, products, and sovereignty. Unlike OpenAI and Anthropic, which sell their models broadly, Mistral focuses on helping governments and corporations leverage AI while preserving a sense of control. French president Macron frames the round, which has the blessing of France's authorities, as reflecting France and South Korea's goal of building a "third way" in AI.
