Mistral Launches Large and Small AI Models to Rival OpenAI and Google
French AI startup Mistral releases a new suite of large and small models designed to compete with top global labs. The new models power everything from complex enterprise workflows to on-device robotics and drones.
Artificial intelligence startup Mistral releases a new suite of models as it competes with leading AI labs like Google, OpenAI, and DeepSeek. The French company's latest large model claims the title of the world's best open-weight multimodal and multilingual system, while a new small model targets robotics, devices, and drones.
The large model, called Mistral 3, offers powerful agentic capabilities engineered for AI assistants, retrieval-augmented systems, scientific workloads, and complex enterprise workflows. Meanwhile, the small model, dubbed Ministral 3, runs efficiently on a single graphics processing unit to lower inference costs and reduce latency for real-world applications.
Founded in 2023, Mistral establishes itself as Europe's leading AI company with a 11.7 billion euro valuation following a massive September funding round backed by ASML and Nvidia. The company states that this spectrum of models unlocks new possibilities for enterprises and pushes the industry toward an era of distributed intelligence.
