MIT researchers devise a new technique that reverse engineers complex 3-D computer-aided design (CAD) models to make them significantly easier to customize. The method targets the common problem where 3-D models become rigid and difficult to alter once they are converted into triangle meshes.

Currently, adjusting a single parameter in a triangle mesh requires manually tweaking countless individual vertices and edges. To solve this, the new system analyzes a 3-D mesh, identifies the primitive shapes like spheres and cuboids hidden within it, and uses program synthesis to determine exactly how these basic shapes fit together.

This reverse engineering process effectively restores the model's original constructive solid geometry, allowing users to easily modify specific dimensions for custom manufacturing. The researchers present this breakthrough at ACM SIGGRAPH Asia, highlighting its potential to streamline 3-D printing and industrial design workflows.
