Mojo Vision Promises AR Contact Lenses Despite Remaining Hurdles
Mojo Vision demonstrates impressive augmented reality capabilities for its smart contact lenses at CES, though the technology remains far from a finished consumer product. The company plans to initially launch the device as an FDA-recognized medical tool.
Mojo Vision showcases its ambitious augmented reality contact lens technology at CES, aiming to bring computing directly to the human eye. With $108 million in funding, the California-based company demonstrates compelling heads-up display capabilities that project monochrome text and graphical interfaces with a convincing sense of depth.
The current prototypes remain far from a finished product that users can safely wear in their eyes. Instead, the company demonstrates the technology by having users hold a lens or device close to their face, largely because the system still requires significant off-device processing to achieve a viable 25-hour battery life within the tiny form factor.
Rather than targeting consumers right away, Mojo Vision announces plans to introduce the smart contact lens initially as a medical device. The FDA awards the startup a Breakthrough Device Designation, signaling a strategic pivot to solve immediate health and accessibility needs before tackling the broader consumer augmented reality market.
