MoneyGram reveals that hackers accessed and acquired customer personal information and transaction data during a September cyberattack that caused a week-long outage.
MoneyGram confirms that hackers steal customer personal information and transaction data during a cyberattack that occurs on September 20. The breach sparks a week-long outage that takes the money transfer giant's website and app offline, affecting a company that serves over 50 million people annually across more than 200 countries.
The stolen data includes a wide range of sensitive details such as customer names, phone numbers, postal and email addresses, dates of birth, and national identification numbers. Hackers also access a limited number of Social Security numbers, government-issued identification documents like driver's licenses, utility bills, and bank account numbers.
In addition to personal information, the cybercriminals obtain transaction data including dates and amounts of transfers, along with criminal investigation information for a limited number of consumers. MoneyGram states that its investigation remains in the early stages and works to determine exactly which individuals are affected by this massive security incident.
