Elon Musk expands his ongoing legal battle against OpenAI by filing an amended complaint that names Microsoft, LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, and former OpenAI board member Dee Templeton as new defendants. The updated lawsuit also introduces new plaintiffs, including Neuralink executive Shivon Zilis and Musk's own artificial intelligence company, xAI. This legal action follows Musk's previous allegations that OpenAI abandons its original nonprofit mission to benefit humanity.
The filing asserts that OpenAI and Microsoft engage in what amounts to a de facto merger, giving OpenAI unfair access to cloud computing resources and competitively sensitive information. Musk's legal team argues that this exclusive relationship actively harms xAI by preventing it from obtaining computing power on favorable terms. Furthermore, the complaint accuses OpenAI of pressuring investors to avoid funding competing AI startups like xAI.
In addition to targeting the corporate partnership, the lawsuit takes aim at individual board members, claiming Reid Hoffman possesses an illicit view into both companies' dealings. Musk continues to pursue claims of fraud regarding over $44 million in donations, accusing OpenAI CEO Sam Altman of rampant self-dealing.
