Mystery AI Model Ox Alpha Sparks Frenzy Over Its Creator
A mysterious new AI model called Ox Alpha is driving intense speculation across the internet about who actually built it. The free model appears on OpenRouter, where it is described as "a reasoning model designed for coding, sustained agentic work, and production workload." Stripe CEO Patrick Collison, whose company is acquiring OpenRouter, calls the model "very impressive" on X.
So far, the model's creators remain a mystery. The OpenRouter listing labels Ox Alpha a "stealth model" and says it is "developed and operated by a third-party provider who has chosen to remain anonymous during this preview." That anonymity fuels a wave of guessing games about the model's origins.
Much of the speculation centers on China. Early theories point to the GLM models from Chinese company Z.ai, though AI analyst Andrew Curran notes that confidence appears to waver. Some reports suggest Ox Alpha could instead be an unreleased version of Microsoft's MAI, while Reddit users remain split, with some declaring it "can't be the Chinese" and others expressing "high confidence" that it is.
