Narwhal Bypasses Reddit API Shutdown With New Subscription Model

The July 1 deadline for Reddit's controversial API changes approaches, forcing popular third-party clients like Apollo to shut down permanently. Most developers face astronomical new fees with no transition period, making it impossible to pivot their business models in time to survive the sudden cost increases.
Narwhal developer Rick Harrison surprisingly announces that his app avoids this mass extinction through a special arrangement with Reddit. The current version of Narwhal immediately removes all advertising to eliminate revenue generation, which seemingly allows the app to operate without incurring exorbitant API usage fees.
To cover the remaining costs, Harrison plans to launch Narwhal 2 as an exclusive subscription service. The new version costs an estimated four to seven dollars per month, with potential options for heavy users to pay for additional API requests as needed.
