NASA Achieves First Powered Flight on Mars With Ingenuity Helicopter
NASA's Ingenuity helicopter successfully completes the first controlled, powered flight on another planet, hovering three meters above the Martian surface for nearly 40 seconds.
NASA's Ingenuity Mars Helicopter makes history as the first aircraft to achieve a powered, controlled flight on another planet. The solar-powered helicopter takes off from the Martian surface, climbs to a maximum altitude of 10 feet, and maintains a stable hover for 30 seconds before safely touching back down after a total flight time of 39.1 seconds.
The flight operates completely autonomously due to the immense distance between Earth and Mars. Piloted by onboard guidance, navigation, and control systems developed at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Ingenuity relies on pre-programmed algorithms rather than real-time joystick controls from mission control.
NASA officials compare this monumental achievement to past pathfinder missions like the X-15 and Mars Pathfinder, noting that Ingenuity opens a new dimension of planetary exploration. The Perseverance rover acts as a crucial relay station, receiving the flight data from the helicopter and transmitting it back to Earth via the Deep Space Network.
