This new project aims to eliminate that restriction by deploying relay satellites stretching from geosynchronous orbit to near the moon.
The contract carries a maximum potential value of $4.82 billion over an initial five-year period, with an option to extend for another five years. However, the task order guarantees a base payout of just $150 million, meaning the final cost depends on NASA's actual usage of the network. Intuitive Machines, the Houston-based company that achieved the first private moon landing earlier this year, plans to leverage this infrastructure to enhance its existing lunar rideshare services.
This lunar relay network plays a crucial role in NASA's ambitious plan to land humans on the moon's south pole before the end of the decade, as that specific region rarely has direct line-of-sight communication with Earth. Beyond crewed missions, the satellite constellation enables advanced capabilities for uncrewed rovers, including remote operation and faster data transmission rates.
