NASA Orion Spacecraft Enters Lunar Orbit During Holiday Weekend

NASA's Orion spacecraft spends the Thanksgiving weekend completing critical maneuvers for the Artemis I mission, including entering a distant retrograde orbit around the moon. The uncrewed capsule serves as a vital stress test for future human lunar expeditions.

NASA’s Orion spacecraft continues its smooth 25-day journey around the moon eight days after launching aboard the Space Launch System rocket. As a cornerstone of the Artemis program, this uncrewed mission acts as a critical stress test to ensure the capsule safely supports human astronauts during future lunar expeditions. The mission experiences a minor hiccup when engineers unexpectedly lose the data connection to Orion for 47 minutes, but the issue resolves without impacting the spacecraft's operations.

On Friday, Orion executes a crucial burn using the European Service Module to enter a distant retrograde orbit (DRO) around the moon. This specific orbit is highly stable and travels in the opposite direction of the moon's orbit around Earth, which allows the spacecraft to maintain its position while using very little fuel. The DRO provides an ideal environment for NASA to thoroughly evaluate Orion's deep space capabilities.

Over the weekend, Orion breaks the record for the farthest distance ever traveled by a human-rated spacecraft, reaching 248,655 miles from Earth on Saturday. The capsule reaches its absolute maximum distance of 268,552 miles on Monday before spending about a week in this orbit. During this extended period in deep space, NASA continuously tests vital spacecraft systems like guidance, navigation, communication, power, and thermal control.
