NASA's Perseverance rover lands safely on Mars after surviving a harrowing descent known as the "seven minutes of terror." The spacecraft successfully navigates through scorching atmospheric temperatures, deploys its parachute, and touches down softly at Jezero crater. Shortly after landing, it sends back an initial surface photo taken through its Hazard Avoidance Cameras.
The entire landing process occurs autonomously due to an 11-minute communication delay between Earth and Mars. During the descent, the rover dramatically slows from 12,000 miles per hour to just 1.7 mph. Onboard systems actively track the surface for hazards and steer the spacecraft away from any potential threats to ensure a safe touchdown.
Perseverance now begins its primary mission to search for evidence of ancient microbial life on the Red Planet. Building on discoveries from previous rovers that Mars once hosted lakes and rivers, the rover uses 23 cameras and specialized instruments to identify biosignatures in Martian rock. It also prepares to drill into the surface to collect and analyze samples.
