NASA releases a comprehensive 3D data set called the CGI Moon Kit, specifically designed for digital creators. This resource originates from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, where science visualization expert Ernie Wright realizes that his scientific data is highly valuable to 3D artists. The package provides everything needed to construct an incredibly detailed virtual model of the Moon.
The data comes from two instruments on the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, a spacecraft that orbits the Moon for over a decade. A sophisticated multispectral imager captures high-quality photographs of the lunar surface, while a laser altimeter measures precise topological depths. The altimeter fires pulsed lasers at the surface to calculate exact distances down to half a meter and determine surface textures like rocky structures or soft regolith.
Creators easily use this information by overlaying the altimeter's displacement map onto the photographic map and wrapping the combined texture around a digital sphere. This technique produces a highly realistic topographic globe that is perfect for immersive applications. The data opens up exciting possibilities for first-person lunar colony games, realistic space dogfights, or detailed cinematic environments.
