Netflix announces an English-language series adaptation of Cixin Liu's acclaimed Three-Body Problem trilogy, with Game of Thrones creators Benioff and Weiss leading the production.
Netflix officially announces plans to adapt Cixin Liu’s acclaimed "Three-Body Problem" trilogy into an original English-language science fiction series. The ambitious project brings together "Game of Thrones" showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, who serve as executive producers and writers alongside "The Terror: Infamy" showrunner Alexander Woo. "The Last Jedi" director Rian Johnson and his producing partner Ram Bergman also join the production team as executive producers.
The source material holds a legendary status in the science fiction genre, as the first Asian novel to win the prestigious Hugo Award after its American publication in 2014. With at least 8 million copies sold worldwide, the trilogy follows humanity's complex and high-stakes encounter with a mysterious alien race known as the Trisolarans. The narrative spans a vast timeline from the 1960s to the end of time, earning high praise from fans including former President Barack Obama.
Cixin Liu and his American translator Ken Liu actively participate in the television adaptation as consulting producers. The original author expresses great respect for the creative team and highlights his desire to tell a story that transcends borders and compels audiences to consider the fate of humankind as a whole. Benioff and Weiss state that they consider the trilogy to be the most ambitious science fiction series they have ever read and look forward to dedicating the next few years to bringing this epic universe to life for global audiences.
