Netflix is testing a new pop-out video player for desktop users that allows viewers to watch content while using other applications. Similar to the native picture-in-picture feature found in Safari, this experimental tool lets users detach the video from the browser and reposition it anywhere on their screen.
Because Netflix relies on its own custom video player for copyright protection rather than default system tools, the company has to build this floating feature from scratch. This custom approach means the pop-out player works independently of specific operating system limitations.
The streaming giant confirms this is currently only a test, but the custom development ensures that the feature will work on both Windows and Mac computers if it officially launches. This provides a significant advantage over simply relying on built-in Safari tools, which only benefit Apple device users.
