A new artificial intelligence tool named PyR0 analyzes millions of genetic sequences to predict which SARS-CoV-2 variants will dominate globally. By mining over 6.4 million publicly available viral sequences, the machine learning model identifies patterns in mutations that allow new strains to spread rapidly and outcompete others.

The model demonstrates impressive accuracy by successfully forecasting the rise of major COVID-19 variants before they take hold. For example, PyR0 uses data from mid-December 2021 to correctly predict that the rare Omicron BA.2 subvariant will soon become the dominant global strain, a reality that materializes by March 2022. The tool also shows it would have anticipated the Alpha variant's rise in November 2020, a full month before the World Health Organization designates it a variant of concern.

This predictive capability offers a significant advantage for global public health planning and response efforts. Because most COVID-19 vaccines target the virus's spike protein, understanding which mutations help the virus escape immune responses is crucial.
